Oh, I do like peaches, or melocotones, as they are called in Spanish.
I remember very vividly when I was growing up in Puerto Rico that my mother used to by canned peaches. My family – mother, father, and sister – would eat peaches as a special fruit during the Christmas Season. Peaches are not grown in Puerto Rico, therefore it was a Christmas Season treat for us as well as apples, figs, and dates, these fruits that are not native to the island of Puerto Rico. I also remember when I was in middle school for dessert at lunchtime they used to serve canned peaches. It was in middle school that in the Home Economics class I learned how to bake cakes and make flans. One of the recipes that I learned how to make was Peach Flan. You can look for the recipe on my Favorites page.
I like peaches so much that I always wanted to have the experience of picking peaches right from a farm. So this summer my husband and I went to a farm to pick peaches for the first time. There were several varieties of peaches and the ones that we picked were Glohaven peaches. The trees were small making it very easy to choose and pick from the abundance of peaches in each tree. It was a sunny day perfect for outdoor activity and we had a lot of fun.
Peaches are classified into two categories — the freestones and the clingstones. The flesh of freestone peaches separates easily from the pit and the flesh of the clingstone peaches clings tightly to the pit. When the flesh of the peach partially clings to the pit it is called semi-free peaches. When you are purchasing peaches to do canning it is best to purchase the clingstone type peaches. Freestone peaches are better for eating fresh. Peaches are low in calories and a good source for vitamins A and C.

After picking the peaches at the farm I was determined to do some baking with the peaches and I decide to make Peach Flan.
