Starting to Discover Who We Are

Regardless of what jobs we have had, what experiences we have lived and what is our country of origin we all have asked, who am I?

Imagine if each of us becomes very aware of who each of us is.
Imagine that we fully accept and enjoy each of the life roles that each of us plays.
Imagine that we know our inner self – our abilities, character, personality, feelings.

Would not this be an amazing thing to achieve? Absolutely!

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the term “self-discovery” was first used in 1642 and it is defined as “the act or process of gaining knowledge or understanding of your abilities, character, and feelings.”

Consider these important questions for which we may find answers once we start our own process of discovering who we are.

Have you ever thought of why sometimes we feel sort of lost in space?
Why we seem not satisfied with the things that we normally do and the material things that we possess?
Why we feel spiritually empty and without direction in life?
Why we seek to behave as a unique individuals and be ourselves?

We want to feel free to show those around us who we are based on our own nature and without copying anyone, this is possible once we gain knowledge about ourselves.

When we gain knowledge about who we are we acquire certain advantages over other people that have not started in their process of self-discovery. For example, our understanding of ourselves grows deeper; we can be proactive instead of reactive; we do not take things personally; we learn and grow from our mistakes; we know why we do the things we do; we have better relationships; we pursue our goals and dreams; we let go of past hurts and forgive; we establish healthy boundaries and we do not live in the past but in the here and now.

With all of these being said, how do we start that process of gaining knowledge and understanding about ourselves?  Well, let us consider the following steps and fully get on with this:

  1. Think about your past experiences, your upbringing, your past jobs, your life in the past 5 – 10 years.
  2. Write the things that really make your feet excited about – your passions.
  3. Think about how others perceive you.
  4. Think about how you perceive yourself.
  5. Envision your own future.

This can be the start of your self-discovering. I encourage you to invest time in yourself as this can define the quality of life that you will have for the rest of your life.
